“Don’t employ people from Machakos please” – Kalonzo’s strange plea to IEBC

With a byelection on its way, and Kalonzo Musyoka being one of the party leaders whose candidate is a top contender, it would be expected that anyone traversing Machakos county on the campaign trail would be lobbying for jobs for the people of the county. A wonder unraveled when former Vice-president, and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka appeared to do quite the reverse.

While on the campaign trail for his party’s candidate in the fourth coming byelection, Kalonzo appealed to IEBC not to employ people from Machakos in the byelection, so as to avoid having staff that could be partisan, or have a bias since they have a stake in the election.

Kalonzo was speaking at the Mulu Mutisya Gardens where he had gone to drum up support for his candidate, Agnes Kavindu, who also happens to be the former wife of Kalonzo’s ally turned foe, Johnstone Muthama.

Kalonzo said it wasn’t the first time that he was asking IEBC to do such a thing, and that even during the Msambweni by-election, he asked them not to employ staff from the locality in the byelection, and went ahead to say he was vindicated when it later emerged that massive irregularities were committed, and especially against his candidate from wiper.

The byelection in Machakos was occasioned by the untimely death of the then Senator, Boniface Kabaka late last year. It is a poll that has not only brought together strange bedfellows, but also, seen former allies face off, and political realignments emerge.

The biggest party which also happens to be the ruling party, Jubilee, having given the polls a wide berth, the contest has become a free for all. DP William Ruto has used the occasion to show open defiance to his boss by supporting a candidate in contradiction to the party’s position. Kalonzo, has, on the other hand, used the showdown to further personalise his tussle with Muthama by fronting non other than his estranged wife.

In the midst of all this chaos however, there seems to be a semblance of order and arrangement, with Ford Kenya, ANC, KANU and Wiper seeming to come together in a united effort against their bigger NASA colleague, ODM.
