The Kisii County Deputy Governor Joash Maangi was earlier today arrested in Kisii ahead of the burial of former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae.
Maangi was arrested today at the Kisii school where he was waiting for the arrival of his newfound ally and Deputy President Dr. William Ruto.
Reports indicate that sleuths from the DCI apprehended the Deputy governor on allegations that he together with other allied leaders were planning to sponsor violence into disrupting the late Simeon Nyachae’s burial.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, DP Ruto, Former premier Raila Odinga are expected to attend Nychae’s funeral at the Gusii Stadium.
According to a police source, the Deputy Governor in collaboration with other political leaders had ferried goons to heckle some leaders during their address at the stadium.
Talking to the standard shortly after the arrest, Kisii County Police Commander Jebel Munene could not confirm or deny the arrests.
“This is a presidential function. Nobody will be allowed to cause chaos,” he said.
Maangi is currently being held at the Kisii central police station, where he is being interrogated.
Confirming the incident, one of Maangi’s aides said they ordered the Deputy governor to enter their car and they later sped off to the DCI offices in Kisii town.
“We don’t know why they arrested him. They did not give a reason why they were picking him for, they only told him to enter their car before they left to Central Police Station where they are interrogating him,” said an aide.
The arrest comes just hours after police arrested former ODM branch executive Samuel Omwando at his house in Nyanchwa Kisii.
Omwando recently switched allegiance to DP Ruto’s Tanga Tanga camp, with Maangi strongly criticizing his arrest.
