Details Emerge On Why Uhuru Moved Ruto’s Ally Charles Keter To A Smaller Ministry

Details have now emerged on the reasons behind the movement of Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter from the Energy Ministry to the weaker Devolution docket.

The same came in a reshuffle made on Wednesday, changes that were announced by State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

And while some might think that this was part of the ongoing plan to frustrate Deputy President William Ruto-allied officials in the government, sources have revealed that it had nothing to do with politics.

Those close to the President have revealed that the changes were made after the CS and PS Joseph Njoroge maintained that the proposed formula of reducing the price of electricity cannot be done.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier met the two and the Presidential Task Force of Power Purchase Agreements, which recommended reduction of cost of electricity by Sh8 per unit from the current Sh24.

But the two had expressed their reservations regarding the practicality of the recommendation, with the President deciding to bring in CS Monica Juma from the Defence Ministry and PS Gordon Kihalangwa to handle the matter.

“The public has been faulting the government on the state of affairs in the energy sector and the new team is expected to deal with this as a priority,” the source told the Standard, adding that the President had been made aware of what the people are going through due to the current high price of power.

But Keter and Njoroge are not the only ones who believe that the recommendations are unrealistic. The team had said that cheaper power for the people is possible if the KPLC can address the unrealistic amount it pays to KenGen, the power generator.

Former Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority Board Chair Pavel Oimeke says that the recommendations are undoable judging by the short time the taskforces wants it implemented.

“The recommendations… are unrealistic and unachievable putting into consideration the factors that advise on the cost of power and the time frame allocated,” says the Bonchari MP.
