As more and more details emerge from the spectacular withdrawal of the elite paramilitary General Service Unit squad previously guarding the Deputy President, and their replacement with the Administration Police, what is most noticeable is how the once mighty have now fallen. Previous Chiefs of Police, from Kimaiyo to Boinnet, had unquestionable loyalty for the Deputy President, and although, constitutionally, the police service is an independent unit, it was rumoured that William Ruto effectively had it at his beck and call.
The sensational details of how DP Ruto was frustrated were revealed by his digital communications strategist, and self confessed spokesperson for the Hustler Nation, Dennis Itumbi. On his Twitter handle, he wrote,

If the changes were part of Normal security redeployment, as the PUPPET @IG_NPS wants us to believe, why did he decline DP @WilliamsRuto calls earlier today. Three Calls.& Did NOT bother to call back. Ukora tu!
The change of police guarding the DP’s residence caught William Ruto unawares as he was hosting a delegation from Mount Kenya at his home. When what was happening was made clear to him, he tried to reach the Inspector General of the police and get a statement from him, but this was in vain. The IG reportedly ignored all his calls.
Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai defended the withdrawal of General Service Unit (GSU) officers from the residences of Deputy President William Ruto, terming it “normal re-assignment.”
In a statement issued by Police Spokesman Bruno Shioso, the IG said Ruto still maintains close protection from the elite Presidential Escort.
“This is a normal re-assignment of duties within the National Police Service to enhance efficiency and effectiveness,” Mutyambai said, “the Presidential Escort Unit continues to provide close protection security to the Deputy President.”
The statement from the IG followed a protest letter by Ruto’s Spokesman David Mungonyi who demanded an explanation on the sudden withdrawal of GSU officers from the DP’s residences in Nairobi’s Karen and at his Sugoi rural home.
According to Mugonyi, the security officer in charge of security at the DP’s residence in Karen received verbal instructions from his superiors on Thursday morning to withdraw all GSU officers from all Ruto residences by 2pm.
