Deputy President William Ruto’s security detail has been changed with the elite presidential escort guards being withdrawn and replaced with Administration Police (AP) officers.
Sources privy to the changes that were effected on Thursday, August 26, 2021 revealed that the number of security officers deployed to guard Ruto’s Karen home in Nairobi and that of Eldoret has been reduced.
Kapseret Member of Parliament, Oscar Sudi took to his social media page and posted a message stating that the DP’s security had been withdrawn from his Karen residence and his Sugoi home.
The Kapsaret legislator blamed President Uhuru Kenyatta and Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i for the changes.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta is a very petty President, but CS Matiang’i is the pettiest of all. The duo have just ordered withdrawal of all security officers manning Sugoi, Elgon View home, Karen Residence, and all other premises linked to DP Ruto,” Sudi stated.
Nominated Senator, Millicent Omanga also criticised the Government for the changes made on the DP’s security detail.
In her statement, Omanga wondered why Ruto’s security was changed barely days after the President asked him to resign if he was not satisfied with the government.
“DP Ruto’s security has been withdrawn few days after the President asked him to resign. So we have sunk this low?” Omanga posed.
According to a source who pleaded for anonymity stated that the changes in Ruto’s security are part of the routine operations by the government adding that some of the officers who were recalled from the DP’s security details will be re-deployed for other assignments.
The new development follows growing tension between the President and his deputy, with the Uhuru accusing Ruto of going against the Government mission of uniting the Country.
Speaking to media editors on Monday, August 23, 2021, the Head of State said that their rift begun following the handshake between him and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga.
In his statement, the President said that it would be of no importance to invite his deputy to a unity meeting, arguing that Ruto has been opposed to the unity agenda as enshrined in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill which was declared unconstitutional by the Court of Appeal of Friday, August 20, 2021.
