Deputy President William Ruto has welcomed his new security detail over a cup of tea at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi County.
Ruto’s security detail was changed which saw the the elite General Service Unit (GSU) officers guarding the Deputy President’s official residence replaced with Administration Police (AP) officers who replaced.
On Monday, August 30, 2021 DP Ruto shared images of him having tea with his new security team at his Karen residence in Nairobi County.
“Sharing a cup of tea with the new security team as I welcome them to the Official Residence of the Deputy President,” Ruto said.
The second in command hosted the Administration Police (AP) officers following the controversial withdrawal of the elite General Service Unit (GSU) officers that have been securing his official residence.
On August 29, 2021 during a Sunday service at Holy Mass St. Augustine Catholic Church in Nakuru County, Ruto criticised the government for making changes to his security detail stating that he was ready to be guarded by the G4S security firm.
“I don’t have any problem with being guarded by the APs at my home. If there’s more work for the GSU officers, let them protect the citizens,” the DP stated.
This comes after the office of the Deputy President confirmed through a press statement that they had written a letter to the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai seeking an explanation over the changes in his security detail.
“The Office of the Deputy President has formally written to the Inspector General of Police seeking an official explanation on this matter and reasons for the breach of security,” part of the statement read.
In his response to the DP demands, the newly appointed National Police Service spokesman, Bruno Shioso stated that the changes in the Ruto’s security team were part of a normal reassignment of duties.
“The Security of Government Buildings Unit (SGB) has been deployed to provide general security to the official residence of H.E the Deputy President from the General Service Unit (GSU),” Shioso stated.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei on his part stated that he would petition Parliament to summon Mutyambai over the alleged controversial changes to the security detail of the second in command.
