David Murathe speaks on DP Ruto’s impeachment

Jubilee party Vice-Chairman David Murathe has claimed that they have numbers in parliament to impeach Deputy President William Ruto after was accused by the party of sabotaging the government.

In his argument, Murathe stated that they can kick out Ruto from his position as the deputy president after both the two houses of the parliament overwhelmingly passed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill.

“The provision for impeachment is in our constitution. Even in the United States (US), the most powerful person, Donald Trump, was impeached at the Congress level twice. He survived at the Senate.”

“When you go for the impeachment of someone of the stature of the deputy president, you need to be sure about your numbers. Going by the numbers that we saw during the BBI vote, we crossed the threshold. We had over 235 lawmakers, and the mark needed is 233. So it is possible to impeach the DP,” Murathe said.

The former Gatanga lawmaker accused the DP of absconding important state functions including the recent visit by Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu Hassan.

“Why was he (Ruto) not on hand to receive the Tanzanian president? He was not at the functions held by Suluhu including meetings and the dinner.” Murathe posed.

Murathe had made an about-turn over his claims that the second in command would be evicted from the hustler’s mansion.

“Eviction is not about the physical removal from the Karen mansion. Eviction is body language…You don’t just walk into state house unless you are invited or cleared,” Murathe stated.

This comes days after the National Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed the Constitutional Amendment Bill.

“That was about the constitution. If they think they have the numbers, they should not waste time. Let them draft the impeachment motion and bring it to parliament and if they can raise 233 so be it. But let them not confuse what happened in parliament and the political realities on the national scene,” Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua said.
