This past week has been action packed as far as politics is concerned, but more so in the case of Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi and his predecessor, and current Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Peter Munya. This has led to verbal exchanges between the two, and which have eventually culminated into what can only be described as overtures to the DP’s camp by Munya following a very curious statement he made about the Kericho senator and close ally of the deputy president, Aaron Cheruiyot.
While on a trip to tour and inspect two tea factories of Kapkatet and Tegat, the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary met with farmers from the area where they discussed, among other things, ways on which to improve tea growing and selling in the area, and also solve any impediments that may stand in the way of tea farming.
Later, after his tour, while addressing residents, Munya decried the multitude of problems that he had faced in the tea sector since becoming the CS of the docket. However, in a sudden and unexpected statement, the CS made special mention of the Kericho senator, Aaron Cheruiyot, saying that were it not for him, he wouldn’t have made the major progress that he had spoken of earlier on.
He said that there had been many problems which he had been forced to struggle with as the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, but ever since the Kericho senator came up with a special legislation bill called the Tea Act, this had managed to streamline the sector well and clear all the stumbling blocks.
This strange camaraderie between Munya and what can be termed as a section of the United Democratic Alliance party comes against the backdrop of what has been a reignited war between Munya and Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi.
Just this week, Munya dismissed Kiraitu’s efforts to forming a new party which will be a Mount Kenya East outfit. Terming it as unnecessary, Munya declared that Kiraitu should be sent home in the 2022 polls since he had done nothing meaningful for the county since his election as governor.
