Fresh details now point at a sealed deal between Deputy President William Ruto and some of the powerful people in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s circle.
For years now, Ruto has been appearing all alone, with Uhuru and his people appearing to have settled on ODM leader Raila Odinga as the next President.
But details now indicate that the same is not the case and that close operatives of the President are working with Ruto in exchange for a stake in his government if he succeeds in winning the presidency.
The agreement, The Standard has established, is similar to what happened in 2013, where Uhuru ceded half of the Cabinet to the DP, but it is Ruto who will be giving away a portion of his government this time.
Details show that now, the Uhuru team wants to be allowed to pick some Cabinet Members in Ruto’s cabinet, with insiders confirming the same.
“There is that push for a pre-election agreement before the August polls, the talks are on a higher level. The pact could change the political realignment, let’s give time for the talks, things will become clearer with time,” a Rift Valley MP allied to Ruto said.
This should come as worrying news for ODM leader Raila Odinga, who has been the biggest beneficiary of the fights between Uhuru and his deputy.
If true, it also vindicates those who have been arguing that the fights might have only been a strategy to slow Raila and his presidential bid down before the president finally returns to his deputy.
But Raila has said that he doesn’t need Uhuru to make him President or endorse him As he knows how to crisscross the country looking for voted.
He has said that all he needs is Uhuru’s vote
