There was panic and tension at Kenyatta University on Monday afternoon after a loud bang was heard  in the institution’s Post Modern Library.

Students studying in the building scampered for safety causing stampede, considering the large number of users of the facility.

Yet to be unsubstantiated reports indicate the loud bang was caused by a faulty lift which malfunctioned and hit the ground hard.At the time of going to press,we had not established whether there were casualties  from the malfunctioned lift or the stampede.

Kenyatta University Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration Prof Fatuma Chege in her address to the students outside the  facility said there was no cause for alarm and that the technical team was handling the issue. She also advised students to stay away from the library precincts to let the technical team sort the issue.

The country’s security apparatus are on high alert and have marked a number of places, including learning institutions as hot spots for targets by Somali militant group Alshabaab.

Kenya witnessed one of the worst attacks at a learning institution in history on April 2015  at Garissa University, which saw 148 students lose their lives.
