Bensoul causes a stir by admitting connection to infamous gay-controversy teacher

Rumours of homosexuality within the Sauti Sol camp have always surrounded the famous boyband which has emerged as Kenya’s most successful group, and has surpassed the success previously enjoyed only by legendary groups like Les Wanyika and Dem Mushrooms. Despite members of the group marrying, and some having stable relationships, this hasn’t stopped allegations of homosexuality being leveled against some of them.

Now, Sol Generation’s biggest star, and the face of the outfit, Bensoul, has made a revelation that is bound to complicate the matter even more.

Sol Generation Records is a record label founded and owned by Sauti Sol.

During an interview on KBC’s weekly entertainment segment Easy Friday, hosted by Shiksha Aurora, Bensoul, in responding to Shiksha’s question about how he came up with his stage name, disclosed that it was triggered by his former teacher. He said that during one of her classes, the teacher told him that he sings with so much soul, and from there, he coined that with his name Ben, to come up with Bensoul. He then dropped the fact that his teacher was called Bibiana Gicheru.

That is a name that hit the headlines back in 2019 after it was claimed that 32 girls of Tumu Tumu girls high school in Karatina had been subjected to harassment, assault, bullying, insults and isolation by the administration led by the principal, Mrs Jedidah Mwangi and deputy principal Bibiana Gicheru. The reason being that they had been alleged to be lesbians.

The gay controversy which caused quite the stir in Nyeri County back at the time appeared to be blamed more on Bibiana Gicheru who, it was claimed, went as far as calling the suspected lesbians criminals.

At the time, it was alleged that the girls were prevented from sitting for their end of term exams, in spite of the parents having paid school fees. Some of the girls were said to have been beaten so badly, that they had visible sores on their backs and feet. They were made to walk around the school without shoes for a whole week as part of the punishment and some developed painful blisters.
