Garissa Town Member of Parliament Aden Duale has been criticized by a section of Kenyans over his comment about the Catholic Church during an interview with Citizen TV.
The Garissa Town lawmaker made the comment on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 on a national TV in relation to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
While responding to a question as to why he ditched the Orange party, Duale likened his former political party to a cult and likened it to the Catholic Church hierarchy, which is headed by the pope.
“ODM is a cult, nobody can speak. It’s like the Catholic church,” Duale stated.
Many Kenyans took to their social media page calling out the former majority leader for dragging the Roman Catholic Church in his political fights with the ODM party.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna posted a message demanding an apology from the lawmaker.
“As an ODM life member and fully baptized and confirmed member of the Catholic Church, I take great exception to the comparison by Duale of these institutions with cults. Duale must apologize and forthwith respect each one’s freedom of association and worship,” Sifuna stated.
Lawyer Donald Kipkorir also issued a statement in the social media page calling on Duale to respect the Catholic Church.
“Roman Catholic Church is the oldest monotheistic religion bar Judaism. Islam & Protestantism are its offshoots. That my friend Aden Duale syncs ODM, a temporal political body & my Church, an ecclesiastical body is heretical to the largest body of believers in Kenya & the world,” Kipkorir said.
Ronoh Cornelius insisted that Duale must apologize to the Catholic Church and fast
“Garissa Town MP Aden Duale must apologize to the Catholic Church and fast for 40 days,” Ronoh said.
