Former Sports minister and Budalang’I member of parliament Ababu Namwamba may be the Chief Administrative Secretary in the ministry of foreign affairs, but he acted in a most undiplomatic manner. In a classic case of biting the hand that feeds you, the Foreign Affairs CAS was at hand as part of the Kenyan delegation to receive the 410, 000 doses of Astra Zeneca Covid-19 vaccines, when he decided to give a speech which, far from being diplomatic, slammed the benefactors.
The CAS, in his thinly veiled attack, slammed rich countries for vaccine hoarding. He called upon all wealthy countries which were holding on to excess doses of the Covid-19 vaccines to practice International responsibility, and release some of the vaccines to countries that may be in need more.
Britain is among the countries that have been accused of hoarding massive reserves of the Covid-19 vaccines.
Kenya received some 410,000 doses of Astrazeneca vaccines donated by the UK government on Saturday.
The donations were made public during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to the United Kingdom this week.
The vaccines arrived aboard an Emirates A6-EPM aircraft and were received by Chief Administrative Secretary Dr Mercy Mwangangi, among other Health Ministry officials.
CAS for health Dr. Mwangangi stated that the doses arrived at an ideal time, as Kenya is engaged in a vigorous campaign to vaccinate more people.
At the same time, she expressed concern about the rising number of cases in the country, claiming that hospitals in the country, particularly in Nairobi, are overburdened.
“Nairobi continues to record high numbers, we need to more as residents. Our medical facilitaties especially in here in Nairobi are overstretched particularly for those seeking critical care,” Dr Mwangangi said.
