DP Ruto is not a presidential candidate, shouldn’t campaign – IEBC

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission CEO Hussein Marjan has revealed that Deputy President William Ruto and other presidential hopeful have not declared their interests to run for the top seat hence should not hold any campaigns.

Speaking in Naivasha on Friday, Marjan said that at the moment, no politician has officially declared his or her intention to run for an electoral seat. According to him, only candidates are allowed to campaign ahead of the 2022 elections.

His statement comes at a time when DP Ruto and other politicians have heightened their campaigns across the country even though the IEBC is yet to declare the official start of the campaign period.

The official campaign period is, however, expected to run from May after presidential candidates submit their papers to the IEBC, to August 6, two days to the General Elections.

“No one is a candidate. They should familiarize themselves with the elections operation plan that was released in October,” Marjan aid.

Though at the moment many politicians have started early campaigns, most of them have come out with various ways to defend their actions.

A few weeks ago, DP Ruto claimed that he has not started his campaigns and he had only been moving around the country initiating government projects and getting to speak with the ordinary people about government projects.

On the other side, ODM party leader Raila Odinga has also been crisscrossing the country popularizing his Azimio la Umoja initiative. He too has refuted claims that he has been campaigning claiming that he has only been consulting with Kenyans about his presidential ambitions.
