Busia Residents Call for Okiya Omtatah’s Resignation, Say He’s No Help to the County

Discontent is brewing in Busia County as residents, led by the Busia Youth Caucus, call for the resignation of their Senator, Okiya Omtatah.

The group has accused Omtatah of neglecting his legislative duties in favor of activism, undermining the trust placed in him during the elections.

In a strongly worded statement, the caucus expressed disappointment over Omtatah’s perceived failure to prioritize the needs of Busia residents.

They claim the Senator has fallen short in overseeing the county government’s activities, ensuring accountability, and advocating for the county’s development.

“Instead of using his senatorial platform to fight for Busia’s progress, Omtatah has focused on activism and lawsuits, which seem more self-serving than beneficial,” the statement read.

The group alleges that Omtatah’s actions have created a leadership vacuum, enabling inefficiency and mismanagement in the county government.

Issues such as poor infrastructure, inadequate services, and unmet development goals remain unaddressed, exacerbating residents’ frustrations.

The caucus also accused Omtatah of using litigation as a tool for self-promotion, branding his behavior as opportunistic and bordering on what they term “litigation conmanship.”

They questioned his commitment to public service and warned Kenyans against supporting his rumored presidential ambitions.

The youth group has outlined their demands, urging Omtatah to resign immediately. Should he fail to step down, they plan to launch a signature collection campaign to initiate his recall, in accordance with the Kenyan Constitution.

“Our county needs a leader who prioritizes its welfare and delivers on their constitutional mandate,” said Emiliana Okotsi, chairperson of the Busia Youth Caucus.

The group has called on civil society and other stakeholders to support their efforts in demanding accountability.
