Tuju; My mother was almost lynched for ‘betraying’ Raila

Jubilee Secretary-General Raphael Tuju has revealed that his late mother and family matriarch Mama Mary Ogola Odiyo was almost lynched in 2007 for supporting former President Mwai Kibaki at a time when Nyanza region was firmly behind Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.

The village assigned her, the driver and a relative the votes President Uhuru Kenyatta got from the village polling station, something that put her in a lot of trouble.

Tuju told a local daily that being related to Ida Odinga, Raila’s wife, his mother had to wait for crowds to subside in 2015 to go and console with the Odinga’s after Fidel Odinga passed.

According to the CS without portfolio, his mother was considered a traitor to the community for having a contrary political opinion that many did not agree with.

Tuju, however, noted that though his family never supported the Odinga’s politically for a very long time, his late mother demanded him to respect the family. He said that his mother always taught him how he can properly relate with Raila and his family.

“She always reminded me that I can differ with Raila in politics but I must never disrespect him as he is my uncle. My mum was born in Sakwa (Raila’s ancestral home),” Tuju told the publication.
