Man takes son to court, seeks 20% of his salary for upkeep

A 73-year-old man from Birunda in Saboti sub-county, Trans Nzoia has sued his son for failing to take care of him and his family after using all their resources to educate him.

Gideon Kisira Cherowo told a Kitale court that he sacrificed a lot for his son, Washington Chepkombe Cherowo to educate him from primary school to university.

“I used all resources I had to enable my son to be in a good financial position so that he can help us. Right now, my wife and I are in a horrible situation,” he said.

“I pray that since he has a good salary, I request for 20 per cent of his salary to be given to me as his father.”

Cherowo said that he has tried several times for over a decade to reach out to his son who works at the Kenya Airports Authority.

“I sold my land in Cheptais, Bungoma to educate him from primary to university. I also gave him a quarter of an acre.

“I even went ahead to pay dowery for the defendant’s wife, which cost me four cows and some amount of money,” he said.

The defendant’s brother who is also a witness in the case claimed that the accused abandoned his family immediately after he got a job in Nairobi. According to him, the brother left home for Nairobi 17 years ago and has never returned.

“We are leading a very horrible life after the defendant consumed everything our father had to take him to school,” Masyek Chorowo, the defendant brother said.
