The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Chair Wafula Chebukati has said footballer McDonald Mariga is a duly registered voter, thus he is able to contest for the Kibra seat. This follows a ruling by the IEBC Tribunal set aside to hear an appeal which was presented by Jubilee Party after Returning Officer Beatrice Muli invalidated Mariga’s candidature.
The IEBC Tribunal ruling overrides the earlier decision where the contestant was bared from taking part in the November 7th by elections. With this ruling, Mariga will join ODM’s Imran Okoth, ANC candidate Eliud Owalo among others to battle it out as the next Kibra MP.
The campaigns are expected to be vicious and a test run for 2022. Pundits believe it will be a face off between ODM leader Raila Odinga and DP William Ruto given Mariga’s candidature was personally being pushed through by the DP.
