In a move to honor the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the government has announced a salary increase for civil servants ranging from Ksh1,000 to Ksh30,000. This decision comes after increased pressure from employees who had threatened demonstrations due to delays in salary adjustments.
Public Service Principal Secretary Amos Gathecha confirmed in a letter that the changes will be effective starting July 1, 2024. “The second phase of the new basic salaries and salary scales will be implemented for civil servants in CSG17 to CSG4,” he stated.
Under the new wage structure, the lowest-paid civil servants will see their salaries rise from Ksh16,950 to Ksh18,250, while those earning Ksh19,220 will now receive Ksh20,560. Higher job groups will also benefit; those earning Ksh102,860 will see their pay increase by Ksh3,000, bringing their new salary to Ksh105,570.
Additionally, house allowances will be adjusted accordingly. “The Salaries and Remuneration Commission has advised on the implementation of remuneration and benefits for the civil service,” Gathecha added, directing heads of Human Resources across various ministries to verify salary conversions promptly.
The announcement is a relief to civil servants nationwide, following their recent threats to protest if the government failed to implement the agreed-upon terms of the CBA. The Integrated Payroll and Personnel Database system will automatically process the adjustments.
