Kevin Hill, a 55-year-old man, has shared his astonishing experience with the afterlife after being brought back from the brink of death. While being treated for calciphylaxis, an uncommon disease where calcium accumulates in small blood vessels of the fat and skin tissues, his heart suddenly stopped beating. Doctors dubbed him the ‘miracle man’ for his recovery, and he said he entered a ‘spirit realm’ where he watched his body deteriorate from the side lines.
Mr. Hill said, “I wasn’t looking down at my body, but I was separate from my body. It was like I was in the spirit realm – I was conscious of what was going on, but I had so much peace.” He also claimed that he knew he had died and watched NHS staff trying to save him from the sidelines.
After losing five pints of blood, Mr. Hill was dead for a few minutes before being resuscitated by doctors. He has made a near-full recovery and is now back home with his wife, Camille. The situation has made him refocus his priorities, and he has become more resilient. He said, “I know I can bounce back.”
Calciphylaxis can cause blood clots and painful skin ulcers, which can then lead to bleeding. The condition occurs almost exclusively in patients with chronic kidney disease. Mr. Hill developed the disease after having a heart operation due to a problem with his heart valve, causing him to retain water in his legs. After medication and a year in the hospital, he lost 65kg of water weight.
Mr. Hill’s experience with the afterlife sheds light on what may happen to us after death. It also serves as a reminder to appreciate our lives and loved ones and to live in the moment.
