Former Leicester City and Chelsea player Danny Drinkwater has emphasized that working on construction sites is his choice after receiving abusive messages claiming he had “failed.”
Drinkwater announced his retirement from football in October after failing to find another club following a loan spell with Reading during the 2021/22 campaign.
The 34-year-old midfielder enjoyed a successful career, starting at Manchester United before winning the Premier League with Leicester, earning three caps for England, and completing a £35 million transfer to Chelsea.
He earned £120,000 a week at Chelsea but struggled to make an impact, going on loan to Burnley, Aston Villa, Turkish club Kasimpasa, and Reading.
Drinkwater has opened up about his mental health issues, having made headlines for being charged with drink-driving and being assaulted outside a nightclub.
Since leaving football, he has tried to move into the business world, but The Sun reported in November that he lost £782,000 from a failed restaurant in Manchester that went under with £2 million in debt.
He bought a 70% stake in another restaurant that has also closed its doors.
As a result, Drinkwater has decided to find more hands-on work and shared a picture of himself working on a construction site with his 585,000 followers.
“Site work today,” he wrote on the photo showing him.
