Scophine Aoko Otieno is a well-known Kenyan writer and media personality who has made headlines for her hard-hitting statements on social media.
She has been involved in various controversies, including a push and pull with Nominated MP John Mbadi, whom she worked for as a social media manager. Aoko has also brushed shoulders with top politicians, including former Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade & Enterprise Development CAS David Osiany.
Born and bred in Nyakach, Kisumu County, Aoko’s journey to becoming a renowned journalist and writer began after completing her secondary education at Nyang’onga Secondary.
She then pursued a course in journalism at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) and later enrolled in a degree program in Political Science at the University of Nairobi.
Aoko started her journalism career while still a student at KIMC, engaging in seasonal writing gigs. However, she initially struggled to find a platform to utilize her writing skills and turned to Facebook, where she shared her pieces.
She shared her articles on her Facebook timeline for months before The Nairobian editors noticed her and offered her a job. She later wrote for The Standard Newspaper and worked for Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor’s Jalang’o TV.
In a previous interview with The Standard, Aoko explained her decision to get involved in the feminist movement. She has been a vocal advocate for gender equality and empowerment, using her platform to speak out against societal injustices and promote positive change.
Aoko has also had controversial moments on social media, including calling out Nominated MP John Mbadi for allegedly not paying her dues as his social media manager.
She claimed that Mbadi had been asking for sexual favors before paying her and accused him of exploiting rather than empowering Luo youth.
Aoko has also claimed to have been in romantic relationships with various politicians, including Suna East MP Juney Mohammed and former CAS David Osiany. However, these claims have been met with counter-attacks
