Social media enthusiast Scorphine Maverick Aoko Otieno was arrested on Friday following a series of controversial tweets targeting Kenyan President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto.
The outspoken online personality, known for her unfiltered commentary, was apprehended at her residence in Nairobi by police officers and subsequently taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for questioning.
Aoko’s arrest came after several complaints were lodged against her over the provocative posts, although the exact nature of the tweets has not been publicly disclosed.
Her lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, initially expressed concerns that Aoko was being denied access to legal representation.
However, he later confirmed that his colleague, Ivy Atekofor, was permitted to meet with Aoko, who assured them she was in good condition.
In the hours leading up to her detention, some of Aoko’s tweets were mysteriously deleted from her social media platform, X (formerly Twitter).
It remains unclear whether the deletions were carried out by Aoko herself, law enforcement, or another party.
Aoko, who has built a reputation for her bold and often controversial opinions, now faces potential legal repercussions as the authorities prepare to arraign her. Her arrest has sparked a debate on social media about freedom of expression and the limits of online discourse in Kenya.
