The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has broken its silence just hours after the controversial suspension of Pastor Elizabeth Mokoro.
The church’s leadership, facing mounting pressure and widespread online backlash, has officially rescinded the suspension directive.
The announcement came through a letter dated July 10, 2024, signed by Pastor Eliab Ombuoro, the Executive Secretary of the Kenya Coast Field (KCF).
The letter instructed all recipients to disregard the earlier suspension directive, which had been issued only six days prior on July 4.
Pastor Ombuoro stated, “In reference to our letter dated 4th July 2024 on the above subject matter quoted (ACTION 24EXCOM-055), we wish to state that the letter is hereby withdrawn until advised otherwise. For those who might have read the letter, we request that you disregard it.”
The initial suspension not only targeted Pastor Mokoro but also included Kenneth Maina, Evangelist Shaban Ndege, Evangelist Millicent Odhiambo, and Evangelist Lantena.
This directive barred the five from conducting any church services within the KCF territory, aligning with a decision by the East Kenya Union Conference (EKUC). Pastor Ombuoro emphasized that the suspension was meant to be strictly adhered to by all branches under the KCF.
The reasons behind the initial suspensions were not disclosed, leaving church members and the public in speculation.
This opacity, coupled with the reputations of the suspended leaders, particularly the sensational Pastor Mokoro, sparked a massive uproar online.
Congregants and supporters took to social media platforms, demanding transparency and justice for the affected pastors.
