In a heartbreaking turn of events, Thome FM was plunged into mourning following the tragic death of two beloved radio presenters, Stephen Waigwa and Caroline Nyarwai, in a fatal road accident on Saturday, July 27.
The two journalists, affectionately known as Stevoh Chifu and Carol Kams De Luciah, had just celebrated the station’s 4-year anniversary before the accident occurred on the Sagana-Makutano Highway in Kirinyaga County.
The celebration was a joyous occasion, marking four successful years of broadcasting for the radio station. Stephen Waigwa, who played a pivotal role in coordinating the anniversary festivities, was an energetic presence throughout the event.
However, his commitment to his faith led him to leave the celebrations early to return to church for a kesha, a night vigil service, as both he and Caroline were devout Seventh Day Adventists.
Tragically, the duo’s journey back to church was abruptly cut short. They were riding a motorcycle when they collided with an oncoming Probox car around 7:00 pm in the Riandira area. Emergency services rushed the two to the hospital, but they were pronounced dead on arrival, leaving a cloud of grief over the Thome FM community.
The sudden loss of Stephen and Caroline has sent shockwaves through their colleagues and listeners, many of whom had gathered at the scene in a desperate bid to rescue their friends.
A listener, still in shock, remarked, “A day that started as a joyous occasion ended up with our best presenters lying in the mortuary.” The reality of their absence hit hard, turning celebration into sorrow in mere moments.
