Confrontation and drama erupted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu during the much-hyped Msuqa Festival, which attracted over 10,000 rhumba enthusiasts.
The chaos began after fans, who had arrived at the venue as early as 6 p.m., were forced to wait until 3 a.m. for Congolese superstar Koffi Olomide to take the stage.
Expectations turned to frustration as Olomide’s die-hard supporters grew restless, leading to disruptions before the singer’s eventual appearance.
Fans Demand Answers
Crowds thronged the stage ahead of Olomide’s arrival, demanding answers about his whereabouts and causing disruptions to the event’s program.
In a now-viral video, Market Milimani Ward Representative Seth Kanga was seen storming the stage and snatching the microphone from Ohangla musician Prince Indah.
Kanga, visibly agitated, chanted in vernacular, “Koffi Omwalowa” (Koffi has robbed us), before being escorted off the stage by heavily armed security personnel.
Disgruntled Fans Speak Out
When Olomide finally performed, many fans were left disappointed. One attendee, Zachary Mbima, who had arrived at 8 p.m., expressed his frustration:
“I can’t believe I paid Sh15,000 just to watch Koffi shout ‘Yaka! Yaka Makisa! Yaka Mopao!’ into the microphone for 10 minutes before leaving. I deeply regret wasting my hard-earned money. I could have spent that time with my family.”
Promoter Explains What Went Wrong
Jules Nsana, the event promoter from Congo, attributed the chaos to logistical challenges. Speaking to Nation, Nsana revealed that Koffi Olomide’s 20-member Quarter Latin Band failed to arrive on time due to travel disruptions.
“The band got stuck in Uganda following flight distractions,” he explained.
While Olomide himself managed to arrive on time aboard a Kenya Airways flight, his band members faced clearance issues at the Busia border, causing further delays.
