A Nairobi man arrested on allegations of fraud has swallowed a memory card in a bid to destroy evidence.
Joel Kakuli Mwangangi, the suspect, was taken to court following his arrest on Friday, August 2. He is accused of being part of a syndicate involved in forgery and fraud related to fake title deeds.
During his court appearance before Milimani Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi, it was revealed that Mwangangi swallowed the memory card upon his arrest on August 1, 2024, in an effort to hide crucial evidence.
The state prosecutor, James Gachoka, requested that Mwangangi be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for examination and retrieval of the memory card, citing health concerns and the need to secure evidence.
The National Police Service (NPS) disclosed that several attempts to recover the card through natural means have been unsuccessful. Corporal Nicholas Osuri Otieno testified that Mwangangi was taken to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Anti-Narcotics Unit, where he was given ugali and sour milk to help expel the memory card.
However, these efforts proved futile.
Mwangangi, along with five others, including Benedict Mwangangi Ngala and Vincent Boaz Owang, faces charges of conspiracy to defraud, forgery of official documents, forgery of stamps, obtaining registration by false pretenses, and uttering false documents.
The memory card is believed to contain significant evidence against the group, linking them to these fraudulent activities.
