Brenda Cheptoo, a mother from Kericho County, has been arrested for the murder of her two young children.
The arrest, which took place in Litein, brings an end to an extensive week-long search conducted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Cheptoo was apprehended alongside her boyfriend, who is believed to be complicit in the heinous crime.
The grim discovery of the children’s bodies was made by Dennis Kimutai, their uncle, while he was constructing a fence around his farm.
Noticing dogs digging at the site and pulling out a red blanket, he investigated further and was met with a foul odor.
Upon closer inspection, Kimutai found the mutilated bodies of his niece and nephew, Salim Kipkemoi, aged 6, and Sheila Chepkemoi, aged 8.
The children had been wrapped in a blanket and buried in a shallow grave approximately one meter deep.
Geoffrey Mayek, the Kericho County commander, stated, “We have arrested the mother of the two children and a man believed to be her boyfriend. We are treating the two as key suspects in the murder as we continue with further investigations into the incident.”
The arrest followed Cheptoo’s confession to the murders, which she claimed were motivated by her desire to marry her lover.
She felt that her children were an obstacle to her new relationship.
