Faith Kipyegon, Kenya’s middle-distance running sensation, is set to receive millions of shillings in rewards upon her return to the country after her historic performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Kipyegon made history by becoming the first athlete ever to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 1,500m event, adding to her legacy as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time.
Kipyegon’s achievements in Paris were nothing short of extraordinary.
In addition to her gold medal in the 1,500m, where she clocked an impressive 3:51.29, breaking the Olympic record she had set at the Tokyo 2020 Games, she also secured a silver medal in the 5,000m event earlier in the week.
The Kenyan government has announced that it will award Kipyegon KSh 5 million for her gold medal performance in the 1,500m event. This is part of a broader initiative to recognize and reward Kenyan athletes who excel on the world stage.
In addition to the government’s reward, Kipyegon will receive KSh 6.5 million from World Athletics. This sum comes as part of a historic move by World Athletics to award prize money to Olympic gold medalists for the first time.
Each individual gold medalist in the 48 athletics events at the Paris 2024 Olympics will receive $50,000 (KSh 6.5 million), with relay teams sharing an equal amount among their members.
