A man who was captured on camera storming the Parliament buildings during the recent anti-finance bill protests has been found dead in Ruiru.

Denzel Onyango, a Kenyatta University student, became a symbol of the youthful defiance that marked the chaotic protests on June 25, 2024.

Onyango was among the protesters who breached the Parliament buildings to voice their opposition to the controversial finance bill.

He recorded himself during the siege and posted the video on social media, a bold move that put him in the public eye.

Just a day after the protest, Onyango was abducted by men believed to be state agents.

Almost two weeks after he was reported missing, Onyango’s lifeless body was discovered in a quarry in Ruiru.

The condition of his body indicated that he had been brutally tortured before his death.

Onyango’s death is not an isolated incident.

Over the past few weeks, at least 32 people, including activists, medical workers, and social media influencers, have been abducted or arbitrarily detained.

Many have recounted terrifying experiences of being snatched from their homes or the streets by hooded, armed men in unmarked vehicles. Victims have described being blindfolded, beaten, and interrogated about their involvement in the protests.

Human rights organizations, both national and international, have condemned these abductions and killings, calling for urgent investigations and accountability.

The Kenyan government is under increasing pressure to address these human rights violations and protect the rights of its citizens.
