Betty Wangeshi, a Kenyan who now works for Google in the United States, has shared her perspective on life abroad, highlighting a common misconception perpetuated by some relatives in the diaspora.
Wangeshi, who defied the odds to secure a job in the U.S., reveals that the reality of living and working there is often misrepresented by those already settled.
Before landing her job at Google, Wangeshi faced numerous setbacks while trying to move abroad.
She applied multiple times for the Green Card Lottery, only to be met with disappointment.
However, her persistence paid off when she casually searched for jobs online, applied, and was unexpectedly accepted. This opportunity opened the door to her new life in the U.S.
Wangeshi’s experience in America starkly contrasts with the narrative often shared by some relatives back home.
“It’s very easy to come here, but since they don’t want you to come, they create a euphoria of how life is hard and how it’s difficult to come,” she explained.
This portrayal can discourage many from pursuing opportunities abroad.
She recalls her mother’s sister painting a bleak picture of the challenges associated with relocating to the U.S. Despite this, Wangeshi was undeterred and made the move without any assistance, proving that determination and self-belief can lead to success.
Since arriving in the U.S. four years ago, Wangeshi has thrived, emphasizing that life there can be straightforward and rewarding.
