Kenyan Police midfielder and former Gor Mahia star Kenneth Muguna has called for the dismissal of Radio 47 sports presenter Lucky Herriano, urging media houses to hire former players as pundits.
Muguna’s comments followed Herriano’s controversial remarks after Harambee Stars were eliminated from the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe.
On Radio 47’s social media page, Herriano suggested that Kenya’s national team should sideline captain Michael Olunga and focus on young talent like Aldrine Kibet, who recently received his first national team call-up but did not feature in the match against Zimbabwe.
Herriano stated, “Wakati wa Michael Olunga katika timu ya taifa Harambee Stars umekwisha. Hata Aldrine Kibet anaweza saidia timu vyema kuliko Olunga.”
Muguna criticized the presenter’s analysis, arguing that ex-footballers are better positioned to offer insightful commentary on the game. “It’s high time TV and radio stations employed former footballers to talk about football,” Muguna said in a reaction that sparked significant debate online.
Fans had mixed reactions to Muguna’s stance.
Mark Mukulo dismissed Kenyan players, commenting, “Nyinyi mnacheza ball ya kitoto.” Henoch Koech added, “Mpira huchezwa ugani wala si kuchangia katika maredio au runinga.” Another user, Priza Nerez, criticized Kenyan footballers, saying they lack dedication, adding, “Munacheza nikama hamutaki.”
While some supported Herriano, others questioned his credibility. Cliff remarked, “Huyu Lucky Herriano huwa anaropoka hata nashangaa sana alivyodhibitishwa kuwa mwanahabari.”
