Nasibo Kabale, once a top-earning journalist at Nation Media Group (NMG), is now living on the streets, her life upended by mental health struggles.
Kabale, who had earned widespread recognition for her health reporting during the COVID-19 pandemic, was at the height of her career when her battle with depression began to take a toll.
Armed with a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, Kabale’s career path was initially one of success. She began as an intern at Mediamax, before moving to Standard Media Group and eventually joining NMG, where she became one of the highest-paid journalists.
In 2020, her outstanding contributions to pandemic reporting earned her a Presidential Award.
However, her mental health deteriorated as she witnessed the escalating death toll during the pandemic. Despite receiving treatment, Kabale’s condition worsened, leading to her resignation from NMG.
In a widely circulated video, she recounted how her struggles with depression forced her to leave her job and ultimately resulted in her homelessness.
“The job became challenging after I began witnessing people dying. It disturbed me,” she revealed.
Kabale is now separated from her young daughter, who resides with her father, as she grapples with life on the streets.
Her story has sparked widespread concern, highlighting the stigma surrounding mental health in Kenya and the urgent need for support for individuals facing similar struggles.
