Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has hinted that his party may soon leave the Azimio la Umoja coalition, following growing dissatisfaction with the coalition’s direction. Wamalwa’s remarks come amid increasing tensions within Azimio, especially after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) agreed to work with President William Ruto’s administration.
Speaking during an interview on Spice FM, Wamalwa expressed his concerns over the coalition’s current state, noting that it is untenable for a party to be part of both the government and the opposition simultaneously. He emphasized the contradiction in Azimio’s stance, stating, “You cannot be the incumbent and opposition… this is where we have reached, and we are in the process of seeing whether we can resolve this issue or divorce.”
Wamalwa revealed that other parties within Azimio, such as Narc Kenya and the Party of National Unity (PNU), have already issued notices of their intention to exit the coalition. He indicated that DAP-K could be the next to issue a similar notice, as the party evaluates its position within the alliance.
Highlighting his frustration, Wamalwa accused Azimio of betraying the people of Kenya by aligning with the government. He described this move as a “betrayal of the highest order,” which has led to irreconcilable differences within the coalition. “For us, Azimio to go into bed with William Ruto is a betrayal of the highest order,” Wamalwa stated. “In a marriage, when grounds for divorce arise, one of those is when you have irreconcilable differences.”
Wamalwa’s comments come after Narc Kenya, led by Martha Karua, issued a notice to exit Azimio. Similarly, PNU leader Peter Munya announced the party’s intention to leave the coalition, criticizing ODM’s decision to engage with the government. Munya argued that a clear distinction must be maintained between the government and the opposition.
