Kakamega County — A tense situation unfolded at Bulonga Secondary School on Monday, November 11, when a police officer allegedly slapped a candidate just moments before the start of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Kiswahili Paper III exam.

The officer, identified as Police Constable Hamisi Mwambeni, was assigned to provide security for the ongoing national exams, but his conduct sparked confusion and agitation among students and school officials.

According to a report filed at Harambee Police Station, Constable Mwambeni was conducting routine frisking of students as they prepared to enter the exam room.

During the process, he reportedly discovered a small wallet in one student’s pocket. Finding the item suspicious, Mwambeni allegedly slapped the student, issuing a stern warning that he would “deal with anyone who would joke with him” during the examination period.

The unexpected act of aggression reportedly caused a commotion, with other students and staff expressing concerns over Mwambeni’s behavior.

Titus Odinga, the center manager for Bulonga Secondary School, promptly reported the incident to local police, calling for an immediate response to ensure student safety during the exams.

Local education officials, including Deputy County Commissioner Christine Eredi and Matungu Sub-county Police Commander, were quick to respond.

They visited the school to investigate the matter firsthand and hold discussions with both school administrators and the police officer involved.

After a thorough assessment of the situation, it was decided that Constable Mwambeni would be removed from his post at the examination center.

A replacement officer was deployed to restore order and assure students of a safe environment as they continued their exams.
