Kazungu Matano, better known as Captain Otoyo, has recently reemerged after a prolonged absence from the entertainment industry, sparking curiosity about his reasons for stepping away.
The popular comedian and actor, renowned for his role on Citizen TV’s Papa Shirandula and as a radio host, has finally shared why he chose to retreat from the public eye.
Captain Otoyo candidly explained that his decision to leave his high-profile job at Milele FM and take a break from showbiz was driven by a desire to enjoy the wealth he had accumulated over the years.
“I realized I had made so much money and needed to enjoy it. Otherwise, I might leave people behind fighting over it, yet they have no idea how hard I worked for it. So I took time to go and spend my money,” he revealed in a recent interview with a local media outlet.
Otoyo’s career took off with his role in Papa Shirandula, where he brought to life the character of a rural dweller experiencing urban life for the first time. This success opened doors for him in stand-up comedy on the Churchill Show and eventually led to his roles on Radio Maisha and Milele FM.
However, in 2020, when the Churchill Show ended, Otoyo decided it was time to step back and enjoy the fruits of his labor, focusing on personal projects and leading a quieter life away from the public spotlight.
Addressing concerns about his health, which fueled speculation during his absence, Otoyo assured fans that he has been in excellent condition.
“Life has been okay. Do you know the last time I was unwell, and I say this with a lot of humility, was in 1998? Since then, the only problem I can have is a hangover,” he humorously noted.
Despite enjoying his time away, Captain Otoyo has hinted at a possible return to the entertainment scene.
He expressed a desire to explore new challenges and ventures, saying, “I would love to venture into other things, especially now that I feel like I have fair experience in life. I think it would be a nice challenge to myself.”
