Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly resigned and fled the country amid ongoing protests, Al Jazeera has reported.
According to the report, the long-time leader of the country boarded a military helicopter, an aide told Al Jazeera, after crowds defied a nationwide curfew to storm the prime minister’s residence in Dhaka.
Nearly 300 people have died in the weeks-long protests that authorities have attempted to suppress.
Following a night of violent clashes that left around 100 people dead on Sunday, tensions remained high on Monday as protesters called for a march to Dhaka and the military prepared to address the nation.
By the afternoon, however, media outlets reported that the situation on the streets had turned celebratory after news of Hasina’s departure spread.
Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has canceled his planned address and is instead holding talks with major political parties, including the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)
