Victoria Rubadiri Joins BBC

When growing up, especially during those parades at school, I remember the headmaster used to remind us of the importance of affirmation words. One of his favorite phrases was “believe in victory because you are a victor”. At that time, we never took a keen interest in that but come to think about it now, does having the name Victoria attract the Victory aspect ama ni bidii ya mtu?

Citizen TV news anchor Victoria Rubadiri will be traveling to London a year after winning the Komla Dumor Award. Vicky announced this after her 10 pm news on Sunday alongside Jeff Koinange. The Citizen TV fraternity bid her goodbye with a farewell cake, Vicky claiming that London was calling and it’s about time.

Victoria Rubadiri acclaimed a position at London-based TV station BBC after she emerged as a winner in the 2020 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award. This Komla award was created to honor the late BBC world News Presenter Komla Dumor who died in 2014 aged 41years. Victoria is the 6th winner ever since the beginning of these awards, following the footsteps of Waihiga Mwaura, Didi Akinyelure, Solomon Serwanjja, Amina Yuguda, and Nancy Kacungira.

“Komla was a well-rounded journalist whose style, though authoritative, was also compassionate, empathetic, and uplifting. His ability to give the facts comprehensively, and yet still be attuned to his audience, was something I admired and a skill I seek to emulate,” said Vicky in her victory speech.

Over years, we have witnessed Kenyan journalists looking for greener pastures in London among them Larry Madowo. Larry kicked off his international Journalism career in BBC and was later promoted to CNN as a Nairobi-based correspondent. As her career progressed, he became an international CNN correspondent where he still works.

Jeff Koinange penned an emotional message to Victoria telling her that he will miss her. To which Victoria responded by telling Jeff that she will be back sooner than he thinks.
