Radio Jambo presenter Gidi Ogidi faced backlash after losing 10,000 YouTube subscribers following his performance during the Jamhuri Day celebrations.
The event, held to commemorate Kenya’s independence, saw Gidi take the stage alongside other artists to perform his popular hit, “Maji Maji.”
President William Ruto, First Lady Rachael Ruto, and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki were seen dancing to the performance.
The lineup also featured celebrated musicians Mejja, Jua Cali, Madtraxx, and the Grandpa Family.
Despite the star-studded appearances, Gidi’s performance sparked mixed reactions online.
Moments after leaving the stage, Kenyans on social media began criticizing him and the other artists for accepting the government’s invitation to perform.
Many accused Gidi of endorsing the Ruto administration, which has been widely criticized for rising living costs, alleged corruption, and unfulfilled promises.
The outrage led to a sharp drop in Gidi’s YouTube subscribers, which fell from 72,000 to 61,000 within hours.
Several users also threatened to boycott his popular Radio Jambo show, Patanisho, co-hosted with Ghost Mulee.
Adding fuel to the fire, Gidi responded to one of his critics, Francis Gaitho, who had shared a social media post accusing the artist of supporting “despots” through music.
Gidi retaliated with a controversial remark, referencing past atrocities against the Kikuyu community.
”When Michuki was killing young kikuyus in the name of Mungiki, Francis Gaitho was not there to defend his kinsmen. Now that i have performed for fellow Kenyans hes calling it ARTROCITIES ,” Gidi Wrote.
His response drew further condemnation, with some calling it divisive and unprofessional.
