Ivy Chelimo, the creative content creator who captured the nation’s attention by coining the nickname “Riggy G” for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has made notable changes to her life following his impeachment.

Chelimo’s story is a remarkable one of how a spur-of-the-moment idea turned into a career opportunity, catapulting her from online fame to a professional position within Gachagua’s communications team.

In 2022, Chelimo trended on social media after she referred to the former deputy president as “Riggy G,” a nickname that was quickly embraced by netizens for its playful tone and ease of pronunciation.

Gachagua, known for his longer and more formal name, welcomed the nickname, even publicly acknowledging it. He described it as “melodious” and remarked how it had helped him connect with younger Kenyans.

“It was not a bad name. It sounds melodious. The youth have embraced the name, and it is good that they are connecting with the leadership of the country in their own way,” he said at the time.

Chelimo’s quick rise to fame led to her being offered a role on Gachagua’s communications team, a position she gladly accepted. Her unique creativity had opened doors to a professional career within the political arena, and she became an integral part of his communications strategy.

For some time, her profile picture featured a photo of herself and the former deputy president, symbolizing her close association with Gachagua and her role in his team.

However, Gachagua’s recent impeachment has led Chelimo to make significant changes in her life. Following his ouster, she removed the photo of her with Gachagua from her social media profile, replacing it with a solo picture of herself.

This symbolic move suggests that Chelimo may be stepping away from the public connection she once had with the former deputy president, as she navigates the next phase of her career.

The impeachment of Gachagua has caused widespread political ramifications.

A government memorandum issued on October 19, 2024, instructed 108 employees associated with the former DP—including senior officials, advisors, and private secretaries—to proceed on compulsory leave. Many of these employees had ties to Gachagua’s office and had their employment terms directly linked to his tenure.

Additionally, government staff and official vehicles assigned to him were withdrawn from his rural home in Nyeri County soon after the Senate upheld his impeachment.
