Award-winning gospel singer Guardian Angel has attributed his mental well-being and escape from depression to his marriage with 53-year-old Esther Musila.
His marriage, which has captured public attention due to the couple’s 20-year age difference, has been a source of peace and stability for the artist.
Guardian Angel, 33, shared insights into his personal life and the role his wife plays in his mental health journey during a recent Men’s Mental Health Awareness Concert organized by comedian Oga Obinna.
“I think marrying the right person has helped me escape depression,” Guardian Angel stated, emphasizing the importance of having a supportive partner.
“Having someone who can listen to you is very great because you are always sane and there is no drama about where you have been or where you are going. I have a lot of peace in my marriage.”
The gospel singer’s relationship with Musila has challenged societal norms and sparked conversations about age and love.
Despite facing criticism and skepticism, the couple has remained strong, providing each other with unwavering support. Guardian Angel credits their relationship as a key factor in maintaining his mental health.
“I pray a lot when things are not going well, which has also helped me,” he added, highlighting the spiritual aspect of their bond.
Guardian Angel has become a vocal advocate for mental health, using his platform to address the challenges men face.
He speaks openly about societal pressures that often discourage men from expressing vulnerability.
“Most men find it hard to open up when they are going through challenges because they are afraid of being judged harshly,” he noted during the concert.
His advocacy extends beyond personal experiences. At the launch of the Nuhealth Medical Centre in Kitisuru, a new rehabilitation facility, Guardian Angel discussed the pressures of fame and the risks of substance abuse, particularly among celebrities.
He shared a poignant story of a friend, once a celebrated musician, who fell into depression and addiction.
“I once gave a friend of mine Sh10,000 and 24 hours later he could not remember who gave him the money. His talent was wasted on drugs,” Guardian Angel recounted, underscoring the urgency of addressing mental health issues.
