The fate of Christine Kavale, a physically challenged college student in Thika, Kiambu County, now hangs in the balance after her rental house was closed over rent arrears.
Christine, who suffers from cerebral palsy and has been an internet sensation for her ability to write using her mouth, has been spending cold nights in the rainy weather after her bed-sitter in Makongeni Phase 6 estate was locked by the landlord for unpaid rent amounting to over Ksh18,000.
Christine, 24, is pursuing a course in human resources management at the Thika Technical Training Institute (TTI). She has been facing challenges in paying her bills and supporting herself, as she had to stop hawking boiled eggs due to developing an anxiety disorder last year for which she has been on daily medication.
Her parents, who do not have a regular source of income, are unable to support her, and she has no one else to turn to for help.
In addition to her rent arrears, Christine also needs financial support to buy medication and continue her studies. She hopes to complete her course next year, but the current situation has left her in despair.
She expressed fear that she may be forced to discontinue her studies and return to her rural home in Kitui County.
Despite her challenges, Christine remains determined to chase her dreams. She has been using her mouth to write and operate her phone and laptop, which has unfortunately crashed.
She had adopted digital technology to make learning easier using her phone, but now she is in need of support to repair or replace her laptop.
Veronica Thuo, a neighbor and friend who has been helping Christine with household chores, describes her as a determined person despite her condition.
Veronica believes that Christine needs support from the government to overcome the challenges she is facing.
Christine is also grateful to Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze, who pays her school fees but is in need of money for her upkeep. She is appealing to well-wishers to support her financially so that she can clear her rent arrears, buy medication, and continue her studies.
