The IEBC 4 distanced themselves from the results to be announced, describing them as opaque, during the IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati’s declaration of the results of the 2022 August presidential election.

However, following a series of ups and downs, the IEBC commissioners were ultimately suspended and subpoenaed to a tribunal for an investigation, which allowed for the leak of vital information regarding what transpired at the Serena hotel just before the results of the presidential election were announced.

Mr. Anthony Chege, the hotel’s general manager asserts in a letter to the tribunal, which is presided over by Judge Aggrey Muchelule of the court of appeal that Mr. Edwin Ogwe made two payments for the hotel’s facilities.

Edwin Ogwe, a longtime ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga, paid numerous tens of thousands of shillings at the Serena hotel for the problematic Commissioners of the independent electoral and boundary commission (IEBC) to have a news conference.

Ogwe paid a staggering Kshs 30,000 to rent a location for the press conference in the first round. He returned the following day and spent an additional Kshs 30,000 for the Cherera Four to hold a press conference.

According to a bill submitted to the tribunal, mobile money was used for both of the two payments. However, the hotel distanced itself from the information presented at the news conference by claiming that they are not responsible for what visitors say at such press conferences.

“The statements broadcast came from our Nairobi Serena hotel. Customers are welcome to request the use of the facilities for the issuance of media communications. We do not, however, accept any responsibility for the claims made, according to Chege.

In yesterday’s KICD hearings, Irene Masit, one of the commissioners, was being defended for her actions during the presidential election process. He was giving arguments during that time.
