Former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Dr. Fred Matiang’i has returned to Kenya after a two-week trip abroad. Matiang’i, who was recently stripped of his role as the head of the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee, landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Saturday evening.

According to sources close to the former CS, Matiang’i is expected to present himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Monday to record a statement regarding allegations of misconduct and abuse of office during his tenure as CS.

The DCI had summoned Matiang’i to appear before them before he left the country, but his lawyers claimed that he was out of the country on official duty and could not honour the summons.

It is alleged that Matiang’i is being investigated over claims of misappropriation of public funds and abuse of office while he was the head of the Interior ministry. The former CS is also facing allegations of orchestrating political violence during the 2017 general election.

Matiang’i, who is known for his no-nonsense approach to issues, has remained tight-lipped on the allegations, with his close allies insisting that he has nothing to fear and that the allegations are politically motivated.

The former CS’s return has caused a stir in political circles, with some leaders calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations against him. Matiang’i is considered to be one of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s closest allies and has been touted as a possible successor to the president when he leaves office in 2022.
