In what is now turning out to be a speedily escalating row, Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali appears to have ruffled a hornet’s nest with his strongly-worded attack on the LGBTQ community which he wholly condemned. In a quick response, the outspoken legislator has now been reminded of an incident that apparently took place back in 2014.
Popular online influencer Njeri Thorne took to Twitter to claim that she was extremely shocked by Ali’s intolerant remarks yet so much money was spent on him back in 2014 in Elementaita in order to deradicalise him. Her tweet read,
Njeri Thorne Lovely
Shocked to see Moha’s comments after money was spent on him in Elemetaita back in 2014 to deradicalise him so as to save his life.
It wasn’t clear what exactly Njeri was alluding to but it is worth noting that back in 2014, there was so much pressure on John Alan Namu and Mohammed Ali because of their investigative news pieces, some of which the government implied, were radical Islamist propaganda. Ali was even forced to go into hiding.
Njeri went further to claim that she was in fact part of the group that took part in deradicalising him.
All these are happening in backdrop of police investigations into the death of an LGBTQ+ rights campaigner whose body was discovered stuffed in a metal trunk have arrested a suspect.
Edwin Chiloba, a 25-year-old fashion designer and model, was found dead by the roadside earlier this week about 40km (25 miles) outside the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, media reports said.
“We have a suspect in custody and we are investigating his role in this murder,” said Peter Kimulwo, the head of investigations at the directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) office in Eldoret.
“We are holding him as a prime suspect because there are leads pointing to him and others, but all these are subject to conclusive investigations,” he told reporters.
Kimulwo said the suspect was believed to have been a longtime friend of the victim, adding that police were also looking for people seen loading a metal container into a car at Chiloba’s home.
Since then more suspects have been arrested and detained as investigations continue.
