Gor Mahia insider breaks silence after suspension of 10 players

Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have suspended 10 of their players for one week for missing training without permission.

The players include evergreen George “Blackberry” Odhiambo, Dennis Ng’ang’a, Boniface Omondi, Alpha Onyango, Sydney Ochieng’ Ernest Wendo, Benson Omalla, John Ochieng and Austin Odhiambo.

A letter signed by Gor Mahia secretary Sam Ochola has given the players seven days to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.

However, an official who did not want to named revealed that George, who is viewed as the ringleader of the group, will be released by the club.

Ochola said they were focused on reducing the bloated squad and promoting talented players from their youth squad.

Gor is still serving a Fifa transfer ban for failing to pay salary arrears to their former players. The ban ends in January.

“It paid the suspended players half salaries for July because we don’t have enough finances now. However, they were paid allowances from the Mombasa trip and other small incentives. The league is just a few weeks away and once our sponsors start remitting money to us, this issue will be solved,” said Ochola.

The players have been on half salary from last year and expected that this would change when the club signed a sponsorship deal with a gaming firm last month. To their surprise, however, their July salaries were equally half and some players decided to down tools.

“They had promised to pay our salaries in full and clear all the arrears once they got a sponsor. Last month the club landed a sponsor but nothing has changed, we were paid half of our July salaries and no one is giving us any explanation on when normalcy will resume. It is because of this that some of us decided to stay away,” one of the players told Mozzart Sport.
