Kenya Premier League side AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda is optimistic of re-election in the upcoming polls which will be presided over by the Centre for Multiparty Democracy – Kenya (CMD) on June 26.

Shikanda said he needs more time to complete some of the projects he had envisioned for the club upon assuming office in 2019.

“My tenure has been a journey of success because we have managed to achieve alot despite a few setbacks we have encountered. The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic scuttled some of the plans I had put in place for the club but all is not lost.As we speak now, there’s a new shirt sponsor on board and we’re also talking to an oil company which will facilitate our movement to various parts of the country to honour league assignments.Besides Ingwe commands a huge fan following due to the structures we’ve put in place and we’re seeking to build on this momentum when we come back” he said

The 13-time Kenyan Premier League champions, who have nothing tangible to display since its inception in 1964 had earlier been allocated a 20-acre parcel of land by former president Daniel Arap Moi in Kasarani whose title deed they are yet to acquire.

The 56 year old ex-Kenyan international has promised to revive initiative geared towards helping the team acquire a permanent home from where they will host their home matches for the top flight league.

“I initiated strategic plan aimed at making this sporting complex become a center of pride for the sporting fraternity in this country.AFC Leopards has a massive following and is an inspiration for many young people. We want to be part of that journey and the progress is underway to work on paper work in a bid to lay the foundation for our infrastructure which will consist of office, gymnasium, training ground and a well equipped playing facility” added the AFC Leopards supremo.

Earlier this week,Leopards landed a new sponsor in the gaming firm Spotika, which signed a pre-contract to sponsor the team weeks after Betsafe terminated their contract.

According to the deal,Spotika aims to help Leopards stabilise financially and assist developing talent from the grassroots.

“For AFC, the future is bright. Problem of unpaid player salaries will be something of the past and we’re negotiating with them to help in direct payment of the playing unit.To the Ingwe fraternity, let’s join hands to reach the limit,” remarked a delighted Shikanda

The veterinary doctor who enjoyed successful stints at local giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards three decades ago is expected to face off with former club Chief Executive Officer Namai Ronald who came third in the last elections with 72 votes while Shikanda garnered 457 votes.

Shikanda insists his mission is to help restore Leopards’ lost glory so that Ingwe can stop their arch-rivals K’Ogalo and title holders Tusker FC who have dominated the local football scene in the past decade.
