Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stepped up once again to offer former Kenyan boxing champion Conjestina Achieng a third chance at rehabilitation.

Reports surfaced online, indicating a potential relapse for Conjestina after her visit to her rural home in Yala.

In a statement released via his social media handle on Tuesday, Sonko affirmed his commitment to Conjestina’s well-being, declaring this as the third and final opportunity for her to resume her journey towards recovery.

He revealed that Conjestina has been reenrolled at the Mombasa Women Rehabilitation Centre, where she will undergo a fresh round of treatment under the careful supervision of a specialized team.

“Even though our chances in Conjestina’s healing journey were watered down, I’m a person who doesn’t give up in life. It is for this reason that we have given Conjestina the third and last chance again on her case,” Sonko stated.

“I just want to let the public know that she was readmitted at the Mombasa Women Rehabilitation Centre where she will start her treatment afresh under the care of a group of specialists,” he added, expressing gratitude to the management of Mombasa Women’s Hospital for facilitating Conjestina’s return.

Conjestina Achieng, once a prominent boxing figure, encountered financial and mental health struggles after retiring from the sport in 2011.

Her journey took a tumultuous turn as she faced mental health challenges, leading to multiple admissions in healthcare facilities over the past years.

In September 2022, she found herself under the care of the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini.

Sonko had previously come to Conjestina’s aid during her hospitalization, providing support and advocacy for her recovery.

However, recent reports of a potential relapse prompted Sonko to address the situation and clarify his commitment to her well-being.

Last week, he defended himself against allegations of using Conjestina’s case for public relations, presenting evidence of his genuine efforts to assist the former boxing champion.
