In the midst of recent speculations surrounding the integration of Safaricom’s M-Pesa mobile money transfer service with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Safaricom’s Chief Finance Services Officer, Esther Waititu, has clarified that no such integration took place.

The statement comes in the wake of a service outage on January 9, 2024, that fueled rumors about a potential collaboration between the two entities.

Addressing the concerns, Waititu emphasized that data sharing between Safaricom and KRA is not permissible under the Data Protection Act.

She reassured customers that both Safaricom and KRA are separate business entities and, as such, sharing customer data is not within the bounds of their legal obligations.

“Let me be clear that there was no integration; KRA themselves also publicly spoke that there was no integration happening between M-Pesa and KRA. We are governed under the Data Protection Act; therefore, we cannot share data of our customers,” Waititu affirmed.

This clarification aligns with KRA’s response to a user who claimed integration during the one-and-a-half hours of downtime. KRA promptly labeled the claim as “fake news,” emphasizing the lack of any integration between M-Pesa and the revenue authority.

The widespread service outage during this period disrupted M-Pesa-related transactions, including the purchase of airtime, causing inconvenience for many users.

Waititu acknowledged the inconvenience and assured Safaricom users that the issue had been resolved, with services continuing to run smoothly.

“We recognize this was inconvenient for a lot of our customers; however, the issue has been resolved, and services continue to run. We can assure Kenyans and our customers specifically that everything is fine, and we do not anticipate any issues going forward,” she stated.
