Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) witnessed chaos as officers from the National Police Anti-Riot Unit fired live bullets into the air to disperse a crowd gathered at the National Archives.
The celebration of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s 79th birthday.
According to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Communications Director Peter Etale, the crowd had assembled peacefully, anticipating a joyous occasion centered around cutting a birthday cake for Raila Odinga.
However, the festive atmosphere quickly turned tense as anti-riot police, led by the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) for Central, descended upon the celebrants.
Etale reported that the officers claimed to be acting under orders from higher authorities, creating confusion and panic among the gathering.
“We have received orders from above to disperse this crowd here. We have been told Raila is coming here to start Maandamano” (protests), stated the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) for Central, according to Etale’s account.
